Darius Bowman is a dinosaur fanatic and was a camper at Camp Cretaceous, Jurassic World's boutique summer camp during the Jurassic World Incident of 2015. He had initially planned to visit the park with his father, Frederick Bowman, who shared his love of dinosaurs but succumbed to a terminal illness before they were able to. Darius won his place at camp by beating the Camp Cretaceous VR Game.

Following the breakout of the Indominus Rex, he became stranded on the island along with his fellow campers.

Biography

As a youth, Darius inherited his Father's love of dinosaurs and paleontology. On one occasion, he dragged his father into his bedroom to show him Alan Grant's latest article on the Jurassic World Forums. Both father and son were excited by Grant's hypothesis that carnivores may have fought not only for dominance and power, but for sport as well. Discussing their upcoming trip to Jurassic World, Frederick presented Darius with matching raptor teeth necklaces, one for each of them. Whilst placing Darius's around his neck, there was a noticeable shake in his hand which he brushed off as exhaustion. He reassured his son that they would visit Jurassic World soon, and it would be an amazing trip, not just because of the dinosaurs but because they would be together.

Losing his Father

Sometime later Frederick was diagnosed with a terminal condition and hospitalised. Whilst visiting his father, Darius informed him of the rumours online that Jurassic World would be announcing a new species by the end of the year. Speculating what it could be, Darius began excitedly talking about their planned trip in May, though Frederick attempted to manage his expectations due to his physical limitations. Seeing his son upset, Frederick reminded him that though sometimes things might fall apart, what was important was how you got back up again.

Frederick would succumb to his illness before the pair were ever able to visit Jurassic World together.

Beating the Game

In 2015, Darius became obsessed with beating the Camp Cretaceous VR Game and winning a ticket to Jurassic World. Though a skilled player, after evading the Velociraptors he kept falling prey to the T-Rex. On one particular occasion, shortly after losing, his older brother Brandon took the opportunity to scare him and he removed his VR headset. Brandon mocked Darius for his inability to get past the T-Rex, and reminded him that professional gamers had claimed the game was unwinnable and that their father would not have wanted Darius to live in his room this way.

Later that night, Darius suddenly awoke with an idea. Quickly skimming through Alan Grant's Lost World of the Dinosaurs, he restarted the game and after temporarily evading the T-Rex made his way to a pile of raptor bones. In them he discovered a Velociraptor Resonating Chamber which he used to call a pack of Raptors to subdue the T-Rex whilst he escaped on Jurassic One. Surprised by his success, a short video featuring Mr. D.N.A. played explaining that Darius had won a place at Jurassic World's brand new adventure camp, Camp Cretaceous.

Camp Cretaceous

Arriving at Isla Nublar's North Dock, Darius met four of the other kids that would be attending the camp alongside him; Brooklynn, Sammy Gutierrez, Yasmina Fadoula and Ben Pincus. The group were greeted by camp counsellors Dave and Roxie then introduced to the final camper, the arrogantly rich Kenji Kon who arrived by private helicopter. As the six kids were being driven to the Campsite, Darius would encounter an escaped Compsognathus that had jumped onto him. He was able to identify it after the camp's head counselor, Roxie, captured it. Once they reached the Campsite, he and the other campers would get the chance to watch Jurassic World employees round up and guide a herd of Herbivores to their night-time enclosures. This herd was composed of Brachiosaurus, Ankylosaurus, Stegosaurus, Parasaurolophus, and the yet to be unveiled to the public, Sinoceratops. Darius would use the zipline to get a closer view of the dinosaurs, particularly the Brachiosaurus.

Desperate to see more dinosaurs, Darius tried to sneak out of the camp but he was caught by Kenji. Seeing through Darius's attempted deception, they were interrupted by Brooklynn who taunted their display of masculinity. The three of them snuck into the Velociraptor Holding Pen as they believed it was the Compy Holding Pen. Darius found himself facing off against Blue after a failed attempt to rescue Kenji when he climbed down into the enclosure to retrieve Brooklynn's phone. Kenji and Darius looked on in horror as Blue, along with her sisters Charlie, Delta and Echo approach them into a kill zone before being saved by Roxie and Dave a few moments later.

Due to his and Kenji's reckless behavior, the two were punished by having to clean dinosaur dung while the other campers got to visit one of the remote Genetics Labs. As they shoveled the dung, Kenji managed to convince Darius to abandon their work and follow him through the Underground Tunnel system to look for other dinosaurs. After some time underground, Darius and Kenji climbed up to the surface and unknowingly found themselves in the Carnotaurus paddock. They are chased by the Carnotaurus, Toro, where they narrowly escaped through a small opening inside the Paddock fence that was used for feeding. They managed to return to their posts just before the others arrived.

The following day, during the cattle drive, Darius was paired with Brooklynn. He was reluctant to partner with her as she had rudely dismissed his campfire story the night before. While in the Gyrosphere, Brooklynn opened up a little about her dwindling viewership and popularity as well as her need to be liked by others. As the storm got worse, a Sinoceratops had gotten spooked and ran away from the main herd. This prompted Darius to follow it in order to herd it back to the other herbivores. Having caught up with the Sinoceratops, the frightened creature knocked their Gyrosphere into the other herbivores and they bounced off of the various dinosaurs before they drove aimlessly into the jungle alongside the other campers and the frightened Sinoceratops that caused this whole ordeal. Darius and Brooklynn are separated from the other campers. Once stopped, Brooklynn tried to approach the Sinoceratops, however, it only angered the ceratopsian. It punctured the Gyrosphere with its horn before throwing the vehicle into a sinking mud pit. Luckily, the other campers had managed to find Darius and Brooklynn and they were rescued.

Jurassic World Incident

The morning after the cattle drive incident, the campers arguing has been interrupted by a distant roar. Wondering what it was, Darius convinced the others to go to the Observation Tower to see if they can spot the source of the noise. While on the tower, they spotted a lone Brachiosaur and two panicked Park Workers that were trying to convince them to get back inside. They watched the Indominus Rex kill both the Brachiosaur and the Park Workers. As the Indominus Rex tried to take down the tower, Darius and the others escaped via zip line to the forest floor and successfully evaded the hybrid. The children returned to the camp to find it in ruins. As the campers argued amongst themselves, Darius stepped up and gave an inspiring speech. He then took charge to lead them across the island to find help.

As the group of survivors made their way through the jungles of Isla Nublar, they found themselves at Gray and Zach's broken-down Gyrosphere and they met up with Bumpy, the baby Ankylosaurus from the genetics lab they visited prior. Eventually, they reached an ACU vehicle and were chased by the Indominus Rex once again. They managed to escape and took refuge inside the Genetics Lab where they encountered Eddie, one of the Scientists who had been left behind. When Darius mentioned they have a vehicle, Eddie ran outside and stole the van. The children watched helplessly as the Indominus Rex attacked the van and killed Eddie. The predator then turned its attention to the children and searched for them. They managed to reach the van and escape from the Indominus Rex once again. As they drove away, the van crashed and the campers were forced to continue on foot.

Having witnessed Simon Masrani's death and the escape of the Pteranodons, Darius and the other campers took cover inside the cave that housed the River Adventure attraction. Once inside, they climbed into the kayaks and paddled through the underground river toward the Jurassic World Lagoon. Inside the lagoon, the Mosasaur attempted to attack Darius and Sammy's kayak, however, it was distracted by Yasmina. After a daring escape, the campers took a moment to rest in the abandoned bleachers that surrounded the lagoon. An alarm blared through the park and informed the Park Attendees to head for the Ferry. Their plans to reach the southern docks were interrupted by a Monorail that was pulling into the station at Main Street. The children encountered Toro and they managed to escape thanks to Darius's distraction and the Carnotaur's inability to climb stairs.

Just as they thought they were safe aboard the monorail, a flock of Pteranodons ambushed them. During the attack, Ben had fallen out off, despite Darius's attempt to save him. Things only got worse as Darius realized they have headed back toward the North due to the track change that occurred earlier. The kids jumped off the monorail and lost Bumpy in the process. Without any time to spare, Darius had the idea to cut through the Underground Tunnel to get to the Ferry. While they were underground, the campers encountered Toro once again.

Having defeated Toro, Darius and the survivors finally reached the dock. Unfortunately, they had been left behind. With no sign of help coming any time soon, they return to seek shelter within the island interior.

Development

In an interview with Fandom, Consulting Producer Zack Stentz compared Darius to Charlie from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

In the world of Jurassic Park / Jurassic World, that park has been up and running for almost 10 years. And every kid around the world who loves dinosaurs — and there are many — they’re going to have posters on the wall, that’s going to be where they want to go. That was one of the germs that the character in the series was formed around was the idea that Darius is our Charlie in the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory thing. He wants to do this thing. He knows that he doesn’t really have a shot, but then he is selected to be one of a very rarefied group that gets to go to this place that he’s dreamed about going to for practically his entire life. So it’s very Spielberg-like and centering on this wish fulfillment, aspirational thing that’s happened. And the wonderful thing, again, without giving it all away, is that because Darius loves dinosaurs so much, you get the sense that he’s really, more than anyone, the one who earned his way to this wonderful visit… that then goes horribly wrong.
