Development
Absent from the drafts by Craig Rosenberg, the first instance of Paul Kirby appeared in drafts by Peter Buchman as Paul Roby; a widowed single father and successful business tycoon. Subsequent drafts brought in a romance subplot between Roby and Brentford as a further antagonist between father and son.
Feedback from David Koepp suggested refocusing the film's narrative solely on the family. Alexander Payne & Jim Taylor, who had taken over writing duties from Buchman, took the opportunity to rework the character with newly cast William H. Macy in mind. Miles remained in place as his son, albeit now called Eric but Brentford was rewritten into his separating-wife, Amanda.
