A total of three 18-inch remote operated animatronics were built by John Nolan's creature effects team to portray Delores on set. The hero animatronic, named Dorothy by the crew, Another, Simba, was used for moments when characters pick up the creature and a third, more of a stuffed puppet, was used for lighting reference.
A trio of technicians made Dorothy blink and eat and move with remote controls, “it was bit like being in a band, where you have to learn to play together and know everyone’s rhythms,” said senior animatronics designer Karl Gallivan.
